چکیده

This paper compares the vnode architecture found in SunOS with the internal file system interfaces used in the Sprite distributed file system implementation. The emphasis of the comparison is on generalized support for remote access to file system resources, which include peripheral devices and IPC communication channels as well as regular files. A strong separation of the internal naming and I/O interfaces is exploited in Sprite to easily provide remote access to all of these resources. In contrast, the vnode interface mixes naming and I/O operations in a single interface, making generalized remote access more awk-

A Comparison of Three Distributed File System Architectures: Vnode, Sprite, and Plan 9

This paper compares three distributed file system architectures: the vnode architecture found in SunOS, the architecture used in the Sprite distributed file system, and the architecture used in the Plan 9 distributed file system. The emphasis of the comparison is on generalized support for remote access to file system resources, which include peripheral devices and IPC communication channels as...

An Implementation of a Log-Structured File System for UNIX

Research results [ROSE91] demonstrate that a log-structured file system (LFS) offers the potential for dramatically improved write performance, faster recovery time, and faster file creation and deletion than traditional UNIX file systems. This paper presents a redesign and implementation of the Sprite [ROSE91] log-structured file system that is more robust and integrated into the vnode interfa...

The File System Belongs in the Kernel

This paper argues that a shared, distributed name space and I/O interface should be implemented inside the operating system kernel. The grounding for the argument is a comparison between the Sprite network operating system and the Mach microkernel. Sprite optimizes the common case of file and device access, both local and remote, by providing a kernel-level implementation. Sprite also allows fo...

The Virtual Filesystem Interface in 4.4BSD

This paper describes the virtual filesys-tem interface found in 4.4BSD. This interface is designed around an object oriented virtual file node or "vnode" data structure. The vnode structure is described along with its method for dynamically expanding its set of operations. These operations have been divided into two groups: those to manage the hierarchical filesystem name space and those to man...

Ex Vivo Comparison of File Fracture and File Deformation in Canals with Moderate Curvature: Neolix Rotary System versus Manual K-files

Background and Aim: Cleaning and shaping is one of the important steps in endodontic treatment, which has an important role in root canal treatment outcome. This study evaluated the rate of file fracture and file deformation in Neolix rotary system and K-files in shaping of the mesiobuccal canal of maxillary first molars with moderate curvature.    Materials and Methods: In this ex vivo exp...
